Hyderabad: Transport Minister Puvvada Ajay Kumar said on Wednesday that a proposal of the Telangana State Road Transport Corporation (TSRTC) for a fare hike would be submitted to Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao.
Addressing a press conference here, Ajay Kumar said a quick announcement on the fare hike would reduce some burden on the RTC which was reeling under losses due to increase in fuel charges by the Union government.
Citing a survey undertaken by the RTC via a private organisation, the Transport Minister said people were concerned about the RTC besides raising some issues.
Quoting the survey details, people were “least bothered” about fare hike and only 4.3 per cent of the surveyed raised objections to fare enhancement, he said.
Stating that there was a need to explain to the people about the burden on the RTC due to the hike in fuel prices, the Minister said the fare hike would give some relief to the Corporation.
During the Covid-19 pandemic, the RTC had suffered losses to the tune of Rs.2,000 crore in the last two years. This year, the loss was reduced to Rs.600 crore and it would further come down in the months to come, Ajay Kumar said.
The services that were stopped during the pandemic period were restored and trips were increased to 1,930 besides buses to new long distance destinations were added.
TSRTC Managing Director VC Sajjanar said the Corporation has proposed a hike of 25 paise per kilometer for ordinary and Palle Velugu and of 30 paise per kilometer for express and other services.
The proposed increase in fares would generate Rs.680 crore for the RTC, he said and requested the State government to consider the proposal.
