Farm crisis claims life of another farmer in Telangana’s Adilabad
Tenant farmer dies by suicide, his wife battling for life after they attempt to end their lives by consuming pesticide; they were depressed over not being able to repay mounting debts
Adilabad: A tenant farmer died by suicide, while his wife was battling for life after they attempted to end their lives by consuming pesticide as they were depressed over not being able to repay mounting debts, at Vadur village in Neradigonda mandal late on Wednesday night.
Locals and police said Poshetti (60) and his wife Indira (55) tried to kill themselves as they were disheartened by their inability to repay loans availed for growing cotton and other crops. While Poshetti breathed his last while undergoing treatment at RIMS-Adilabad, Indira’s medical condition was learnt to be critical.
The couple suffered huge losses due to decline in yield of cotton crop raised in 10 acres leased out from another farmer. The losses were attributed to unfavourable climate, surge in cost of pesticides and low minimum support price for cotton. The quantum of the loan was not known yet.
Locals alleged that the delay in sanctioning of the Rythu Bharosa crop investment support augmented the financial crisis being faced by the couple.
At least 10 farmers in the district have died by suicide in the last two months. Bolli Raju (40) resorted to the drastic step by consuming pesticide as he was disheartened by his inability to repay a loan of Rs 9,000 at Borigaon village in Sirikonda mandal on February 15.
Earlier, at least eight farmers in the district died by suicide between December 1, 2024, and February 15, 2025, as they were unable to repay loans, indicating the gravity of the unprecedented agriculture crisis prevailing in the district.
