Jayashankar Bhupalpally: In a tragic incident, a farmer died, allegedly by suicide after consuming pesticide at his field in Yeleti Ramaiahpally village of Chityal mandal in the district on Wednesday.
The deceased was identified as Ummanvena Yellaiah (62). According to family members, Yellaiah allegedly took the extreme step as crops in six acres were damaged in the recent rains. While he owned six acres, he also took four more acres on lease and cultivated chilli in five acres and cotton in another five acres. But following the heavy rains, the chilli crop was flooded with water resulting in poor growth, and the rains also flattened the cotton plants, they alleged.
Disheartened by the damage to crops, Yellaiah consumed the pesticide in the field and died on the spot. Farmers of neighbouring fields noticed his body and informed the family members. The family had already borrowed Rs eight lakhs to meet agriculture expenditure, source said.
Police visited the spot and shifted the body to Chityal Community Health Centre (CHC) for postmortem. He is survived by wife Radha, son Ravi and two daughters.
