Nirmal: A 53-year-old farmer died by suicide by hanging himself, reportedly distressed over mounting debts, at Mohala village in Lokeshwaram mandal on Tuesday.

According to family members and local police, the farmer, identified as Dande Ganganna, took the extreme step in front of his house as he was unable to clear his debts.

Ganganna had cultivated cotton by borrowing from a bank and local moneylenders. However, due to unfavourable weather conditions, he suffered heavy losses because of a poor yield. Deeply upset over his inability to repay the loans, he ended his life. The exact amount of debt is yet to be ascertained.

Based on a complaint lodged by his family members, police have registered a case and taken up investigation.
