Adilabad: A 52-year-old farmer allegedly died by suicide as he was depressed over his inability to repay debts caused by farm crisis at Garkampet village in Gudihathnoor mandal on Friday.

Police said that Vuyika Madhav attempted to end life by consuming pesticide on Wednesday. Madhav was immediately admitted to Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS)-Adilabad. He breathed his last while undergoing treatment on Friday.

Madhav grew a cotton crop in his one acre of land by borrowing Rs 1 lakh from a local bank and Rs 1 lakh from other sources. He registered losses in the farming due to dip in yield of the crop. He was disheartened by his inability to repay the loans. He is survived by a wife, two sons and a daughter.

Incidentally, it was the ninth case of suicide by a farmer in the district in the last two months. Bolli Raju (40) restored to the drastic step by consuming pesticide as he was disheartened by his inability to repay a loan of Rs 9,000 at Borigaon village in Sirikonda mandal on January 28.

Earlier, seven farmers in the district died by suicide as they were disheartened by their inability to repay loans between December 1 to January 25, indicating the gravity of the unprecedented agriculture crisis prevailed in the district.
