Hyderabad: Congress MLA from Jadcherla, J Anirudh Reddy, faced stiff resistance from farmers losing land under the Regional Ring Road project at Balanagar on Monday, when they confronted him over their livelihood concerns.
The MLA had visited Panchakula Gadda Thanda in Balanagar for the house-warming ceremony of an Indiramma House beneficiary. On learning of his visit, several farmers, including women, reached the venue and sought justice.
The women questioned the priorities of the State government, alleging that lands belonging to landlords and corporate companies were being spared from acquisition, while those of small and marginal farmers were being targeted for the project.
The farmers said they depended on cultivation for their livelihood and warned that if their lands were acquired for the RRR, they would face severe financial distress and many would be forced to migrate elsewhere in search of work.
Although the MLA tried to pacify them, the farmers insisted that he mount pressure on the government to ensure their lands were not acquired.
The farmers dispersed only after the MLA assured them that he would take up the issue with the government.
