Palghar: A domestic dispute centring around an eight-month-old infant in Virar in Palghar district led to the death of her mother on Thursday morning, a police official said. The 28-year-old woman, identified as Prachi Kalpesh Patil, suffered severe head trauma after her father-in-law allegedly pushed her onto the floor, following which accused Ganpat Patil (60) was arrested, the official added.

“Prachi, a resident of Naringi village near the Ekvira Temple in Virar West, was facing harassment from her father-in-law. Distressed by the continuous friction, her brother, Vishal Anant Patil, arrived at her residence this morning to take her to her parental home,” he said.

“Her eight-month-old daughter was resting on her father-in-law’s shoulder. When Prachi stepped forward to take the infant into her arms, accused Ganpat Patil refused to hand the child over. It led to an argument, during which he pushed Prachi, who hit her head on the tiled floor,” the official added.

She was rushed to a nearby hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries during treatment, the official added. Following the incident, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone 3) Shashikant Borate, Assistant Commissioner of Police Sunil Jaibhaye, Senior Inspector Prakash Kawale and Sub-Inspector Navnath Kadam visited the house as part of the probe.

Based on a complaint lodged by the victim’s brother, a case was registered at Bolinj police station against Ganpat Patil under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita sections for culpable homicide not amounting to murder, criminal intimidation and other offences. He will be produced in Vasai sessions court on Friday morning, senior inspector Prakash Kawale said.
