Hyderabad: State unit of BJP on Tuesday urged Governor Tamilisai Soundararajan to intervene and ensure that the posts of Vice-Chancellors (V-Cs) vacant in various universities in the State are filled immediately.
In a memorandum submitted to the Governor, a delegation led by party senior leader P Muralidhar Rao, BJP OBC Morcha national president K Laxman, MLC N Ramachandra Rao and others said the government was delaying the appointment of V-Cs.
After the State formation, Osmania University, Kakatiya University, JNTU, Mahatma Gandhi, Palamur and Telangana universities along with the Open University functioned without regular V-Cs from 2014 to 2016. Currently, except two universities, the remaining varsities are without V-Cs for more than 18 months, the delegation said.
The government has been appointing IAS officers as in-charges whenever the term of a regular V-C came to an end to look after the affairs of the university concerned, they said, adding that Registrars of universities were unable to meet in-charge V-Cs even to get their signatures on important files. Most in-charge V-Cs were unable to find time to visit the university under their control even once during the last 18 months, the BJP leaders alleged.
Alleging that several Registrars were bypassing well-established academic procedures and taking decisions to please certain pressure groups that resulted in deterioration of academic standards, they said that if the same situation continues, damage to the university system would become irreparable.
The delegation also requested the Governor to fill vacant teaching and non-teaching posts in universities and other vacancies in government degree and junior colleges along with improving infrastructure and student support facilities in educational institutions.
