Hyderabad: Former Asian Games gold-medallist powerlifter Joseph James, who recovered from Covid-19 recently, is set to receive a financial aid of Rs 2.5 lakh from the Sports Ministry. The former athlete from Hyderabad has applied through Pandit Deen Dayal Upadhyay National Welfare Fund for Sportspersons and the amount has been approved by the ministry on Tuesday.
The gold medallist from 2008 Asian Powerlifting Championship had contracted the virus on April 24 and was admitted in a hospital in Hyderabad after his oxygen levels had declined. However, after spending around a week in the intensive care unit (ICU), he recovered and returned home.
The financial assistance comes under the jointly collaborated initiative from the Sports Authority of India, Indian Olympic Association (IOA) and the sports ministry to support ex-international athletes and coaches amid the ongoing pandemic, said Jagan Mohan Rao, one of the representatives of the State.
