Medak: Two milch buffaloes and five calves were burnt alive when a cattle shed caught fire at Bojya Thanda in Shivampet mandal on Tuesday night.

According to locals, farmer Banoth Lakshman had kept his cattle in a shed on the outskirts of the village. A fire that started from a heap of hay stored close to the shed spread rapidly, engulfing the structure.

Lakshman discovered the tragedy on Wednesday morning, by which time the shed and cattle were reduced to ashes. Villagers have urged the government to provide financial assistance to the farmer to enable him to purchase new buffaloes, his family’s only source of livelihood. The farmer’s family was inconsolable over the loss.
