Hyderabad: A reactor in a chemical manufacturing factory was damaged, triggering a gas leakage at Maruthi Nagar in Golnaka in Amberpet area here on Friday.
Officials said a technical glitch was suspected to have led to the leakage. It was around noon that local residents sensed a pungent smell emanating from the Deccan Chemicals factory, which is surrounded by residential colonies. They immediately alerted the police and the fire department.
According to the police, on receiving information, a fire engine was rushed to the spot and a team from the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation also reached the spot. They brought the situation under control within an hour.
“The chemical company had reactors which contained acidic substances and other chemicals. One such reactor was damaged resulting in the gas leakage,” officials said.
There were a few people on the premises at the time of the mishap, but all were safe, police said.
Due to the presence of chemicals and acidic substances in the unit, a pungent odour spread in the surrounding areas, triggering panic among the residents.
The Amberpet police are investigating. Meanwhile, the GHMC officials have seized the unit.
