Fire mishap at Vizag steel plant protest camp
Though the tent and furniture was burnt at the protest camp in front of GVMC, no causalities were reported
Visakhapatnam: Fire destroyed the relay fast camp which was going on for the past 52 days to oppose the privatisation of Visakhapatnam steel plant, in front of the Gandhi statue opposite the GVMC main office here on Sunday morning.
However, there were no casualties though the tent and furniture was burnt. The cause for the fire was not established yet. Morning walkers who saw the fire in the tent around 5 a.m. immediately informed the police and fire tenders extinguished the flames.
All trade union leaders strongly condemned the incident and urged the state government to take appropriate action to prevent such incidents.
General secretary of the “Forum for Development of North Andhra, A. Aja Sarma, on Sunday said that the agitation against the privatisation of the Visakhapatnam steel plant had spread nation-wide and foolhardy attempts such as burning of the tent would only strengthen the resolve of the people’s organisations to intensify the movement.
