Hyderabad: Bathukamma, the festival of colours and melodies that celebrates women as well, began in the city on Wednesday. The celebration of togetherness, a culture and tradition unique to Telangana, saw women coming together with the floral arrangements for the nine-day long festival.
In the GHMC limits, Mayor G Vijaya Laxmi, Deputy Mayor Mothe Srilatha Shoban Reddy and other corporators celebrated the festival in their respective wards. Bathukamma songs were played at all the venues, with the recent work by music maestro AR Rahman and Gautham Vasudev Menon, ‘Allipoola Vennela’, being a favourite at all the places where Bathukamma is being celebrated.
“Women are successfully discharging their duties in various fields apart from managing their family and homes. May the blessing of Ammavaru always be with them,” the Mayor said.
Earlier, elaborate arrangements were made by the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) at artificial ponds across the city. Staffers were pressed into service to remove waste from water bodies. Besides, deploying men, the civic body also installed 130 models of Bathukamma at city junctions.
Meanwhile, as part of the Bathukamma saree distribution initiative, the GHMC has distributed over 4.5 lakh sarees to beneficiaries across the city till Wednesday. This year, in the GHMC limits, over 17 lakh Bathukamma sarees will be distributed from 838 distribution centres. As per norms, all women above 18 years having white ration cards will be provided with Bathukamma sarees.
