Peddapalli: Around 300 nature lovers and fitness enthusiasts participated in the first edition of a 15-km walking and trekking event at historic Ramagiri Fort, located near Begumpet village in Kamanpur mandal, on Sunday. The event was jointly organised by Yuvashakti Peddapalli and the district administration to promote the historic site.
Participants from several parts of Peddapalli, as well as neighbouring Mancherial, Karimnagar, Jagtial and Jayashankar Bhupalpally districts, gathered at Begumpet by 6 am. They then walked and trekked across the fort, exploring its historical remains and scenic locations.
Godavarikhani ACP Madatha Ramesh flagged off the event.
Lenkala Mahipal of Yuvashakti said the event received a good response from nature lovers and fitness enthusiasts from different parts of Telangana. He said the ancient fort deserved greater recognition and could become a major tourist attraction if developed with basic amenities.
Mahipal described the fort as an asset to the district and said developing it as a tourist destination could attract visitors from across India and abroad.
According to local accounts and historians, Ramagiri Fort was reportedly constructed using stone in the first century. The fort has several bastions spread across the hillocks. It also features nine cannons at different locations and 40 thoranams (festoon-like structures).
The fort is known for its panoramic views and rare medicinal plants. Local residents visit the site during the monsoon, and some collect plants traditionally used in medicinal preparations.
Ramagiri Fort is also believed to have played an important role across different historical periods, including the era of the Asaf Jahis.
