Hyderabad: It will be held from the second week of March while the auctioning will be held this Sunday.
In the inaugural year, the HPGL will consist of 12 teams. Each team will have a captain/owner and three golfers that each team can choose outside of the common pool but within the confines of team composition. Each team will have to choose another 8 players from the common pool.
The common pool consists of members who wish to participate in the tournament. These members will have to preregister to be part of the pool. The league will be played over a period of 6 weekends first year and the team ownership will be for a period of three years with an annual renewal fee offered with first right of refusal to the existing owners.
There could be new teams depending on the interest of the golfer and players drafted from the common pool will be available back in the pool every year or can be retained for a fixed fee which will be deducted from the team auction budget. The 3 original players selected will have the option to also be available in the pool at the end of each year but there will be no trading of players within the teams.
According to the organisers, this inaugural tournament will create a brand that golfers want to associate with. The golfers can plan strategies and make the best team that others envy.
Initiated by a team of passionate golfers, the tournament will give a new experience and encourage players to take the game seriously. Of late, golf has become popular in the country and in the city.
Eminent cricketer SL Venkatapathy Raju, like Kapil Dev and Murali Karthik, is an avid golfer and has taken part in many tournaments in the country. “After retiring from cricket, I found golf a wonderful sport. Whenever I’m free, I make it a point to play this game. I see many young golfers coming up in the city and this tournament is the right type of encouragement. It brings in a competitive spirit among the golfers. I’m looking forward to the tournament,’’ he said.
