Karimnagar: Finance Minister T Harish Rao informed that the State government has decided to establish fish processing units with international standards. Initially, the units would be established in fisheries department lands in Sheriguda near Hyderabad, Khammam, Karimnagar, Nizamabad and Warangal.

Speaking during the joining of Chairman of Karimnagar Fisheries Corporation, Poli Laxman Mudiraj and others into TRS party in Huzurabad, the minister said the government was contemplating to purchase fish from fisheries cooperative societies through fishermen federation and market them with a new brand of ‘Telangana Fish’.

The Minister said that Iin order to strengthen the marketing system, the State government has already started mobile fish outlets. A cluster would be constituted along with two to three mandals and fish would be collected by sending vehicles to 40 to 50 clusters which would be linked to the main processing unit, he added.

While all State governments were neglecting the fishermen community, the Telangana government was supporting the community a lot and introduced a number of welfare schemes to protect the interests of the community, he said.

The fish population in the state has been enhanced abnormally with the free fish seed distribution scheme launched by the Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao. In the year 2016-17, 1.97 lakh tons of fish was caught across the state. However, the number has been enhanced to 3.49 lakh tons in 2020-21.

While 60 per cent of the fish was utilized for local needs, the remaining 40 percent was exported to other states such as West Bengal (21 percent) and 19 percent to Assam, Tamil Nadu, and Kerala states. Though the Chief Minister has introduced a number of welfare schemes for economic and social growth of the fishermen community, the latter was incurring losses by selling fish to middlemen. So, the government has decided to purchase fish from fisheries cooperative societies, he informed.
