Fishermen protest against allocation of tank to contractor in Mancherial

Mancherial: Fishermen of a cooperative society demanded catching fish by a contractor in an irrigation tank be stopped immediately. They staged a protest by scaling an overhead water tank and threatened to die by suicide in Bheemaram mandal centre on Friday.
The agitating fishermen alleged that the officials of fisheries department illegally awarded the contract of fishing in Gollavagu cheruvu to the contractor, affecting their livelihood. They regretted that the officials did not resolve the problem even after representing to them several times.
The fishermen, however, withdrew their protest when the officials assured to address their problem. They urged the government to take steps to ensure livelihood to the fishermen by not allocating catching fish in irrigation tanks to contractors.
