New Delhi: A 45-year-old Delhi man allegedly survived two attempts on his life — one involving firing outside his brother’s house and another in which he was deliberately hit by a car in a staged road accident — before he was finally run over by an SUV in the Kanjhawala area, police said on Thursday. Behind the multiple attempts to take his life was a 22-year-old enmity that stemmed from the deceased’s alleged harassment of the accused’s sister, police said.

Pawan alias Jagpal Dabas (45) allegedly hatched a conspiracy to kill Deepak Dabas — the first attempt was a firing outside the house of the deceased’s brother. When Deepak survived, he allegedly tried to have him killed by intentionally hitting him with a car on July 2. Pawan was arrested on Wednesday.

“When the attempts failed, the conspirators made another attempt that resulted in Deepak’s death on July 16,” Deputy Commissioner of Police (Rohini) Shashank Jaiswal, during a press conference said. Four others have also been arrested for Deepak’s death since the police probe began.

DCP Jaiswal said the case came to light on July 16 when a PCR call was received at Kanjhawala police station regarding a man lying dead near an SUV in a field close to Chandpur Majra in Kanjhawala. A police team immediately reached the spot and found the body of the victim. A damaged scooter was found about 100 metres away. During the investigation, the deceased was identified as Deepak, a resident of Majra Dabas village.

An FIR was subsequently registered at Kanjhawala police station and a team was formed to investigate the murder. The investigation revealed that Deepak had earlier met with a road accident on July 2 while riding his scooter in Majra Dabas. He was hit by a car and the incident was registered under another FIR.

“As the probe progressed, the team arrested Sagar alias Kala (30), on July 17. During sustained interrogation, he disclosed the conspiracy and told the team that he had intentionally hit Deepak with the car on July 2 in an attempt to kill him,” the DCP said.

The vehicle used in that earlier attempt was subsequently recovered from one Atul alias Monty (30), police said. Further interrogation of Sagar revealed the role of Pawan alias Jagpal Dabas (45), who was identified as the alleged main conspirator. According to police, Pawan had previous enmity with Deepak and had hatched a conspiracy to kill him.

The investigation then led police to other alleged associates involved in the conspiracy. Sahil (23), was arrested on July 22 for allegedly harbouring Pawan and helping him evade arrest, police said. “Prince alias Tilli (24), was arrested on July 26 for arranging the Scorpio used in the incident which was used to run over Deepak to his death,” the officer added.

Pawan, the main conspirator, was finally arrested on August 12 after sustained efforts by the joint police team. According to the police, Pawan had been involved in four criminal cases earlier, while Sagar had two previous criminal cases registered against him. Prince also had two previous criminal cases, while no previous criminal involvement was listed against Atul and Sahil.

The five arrested accused are Pawan alias Jagpal Dabas, Sagar alias Kala, Atul alias Monty, Sahil and Prince alias Tilli. Police have recovered two vehicles connected with the incidents – a Scorpio used in the July 16 incident and the Hyundai i10 car used in the July 2 attempt to kill Deepak. Two mobile phones were also recovered during the investigation. Police said the investigation is still in progress to examine all aspects of the alleged conspiracy and complete the necessary legal proceedings.
