Hyderabad: Nandamuri Balakrishna, fondly called “Balayya Babu” by millions of admirers, has added another feather to his illustrious journey. Completing five decades in cinema, the actor-politician has now found a place in the World Book of Records UK Gold Edition. The honour was formally presented in Hyderabad on August 30, with Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Bandi Sanjay, AP IT Minister Nara Lokesh, actress Jayasudha and industry stalwarts joining the felicitation.
The recognition is historic: Balakrishna becomes the first Indian hero to be selected for this rare global honour purely for his uninterrupted run as a leading man in films for fifty years.
A cinematic legacy built on iconic roles
Balakrishna’s journey began as a teenager in Tatamma Kala (1974). Over time, he transformed into one of Telugu cinema’s most enduring stars, building a repertoire that cut across genres. From rural dramas like Mangamma Gari Manavadu (1984) to action epics such as Samarasimha Reddy (1999) and Narasimha Naidu (2001), his screen presence cemented him as a mass favourite.
He has never shied away from experimentation. Aditya 369 (1991) became India’s first sci-fi adventure, while Gautamiputra Satakarni (2017) revived a slice of Telugu history with grandeur. The more recent Legend (2014) ran for an unprecedented 1000 days in a single theatre, while Akhanda (2021) redefined his box office reach and set the stage for its sequel.
In all, Balakrishna has acted in over 110 films, pairing opposite more than 120 leading actresses, a record in itself. His versatile portrayals, whether as a mythological figure, a historical emperor, or a rugged mass leader, continue to resonate with the audience.
Public service beyond cinema
Like his father, N T Rama Rao, Balakrishna extended his career beyond films. He has been elected MLA from Hindupur three times and continues to represent his constituency actively. His commitment to public welfare is most visible through the Basavatarakam Indo-American Cancer Hospital, established in memory of his mother, which has served thousands of patients with affordable cancer care.
At the felicitation event, he further announced a donation of Rs 50 lakhs to the Telangana CM Relief Fund to support flood-affected areas, underlining his belief that service and art must go hand in hand.
Voices of admiration
The event was marked by emotional tributes from colleagues and political leaders alike.
Bandi Sanjay described Balakrishna as “a frank, fearless personality who entertains on screen while serving society off screen,” calling his recognition a matter of pride for all Telugu people.
Nara Lokesh, speaking as both Balakrishna’s son-in-law and a Minister, said, “Heroes have fans, but Balayya Babu has die-hard devotees. From Tatamma Kala to Akhanda 2, he has remained unstoppable.”
Industry biggies, including Dil Raju, Boyapati Srinu, Gopichand Malineni, Thaman, and Suresh Babu, echoed similar sentiments, each crediting his dedication and energy as a reason for Telugu cinema’s growing global visibility.
Balayya’s promise for the future
Accepting the honour, Balakrishna expressed gratitude to his parents, his family, his directors, and, above all, his fans. “All these successes are because of the love of the people. Cinema is a powerful medium, and I will continue this journey with the same passion,” he said.
From being the son of NTR to carving an independent legacy that now stands in the World Book of Records, Balakrishna has proven that longevity in cinema is not just about stardom but about relevance, reinvention, and relentless service.
