Karimnagar: Five burglars who made an attempt to loot the Utoor branch of State Bank of India in Manakondur mandal on the intervening night of December 15 and 16 have been arrested by the police.

Producing the accused before mediapersons here on Friday, Commissioner of Police VB Kamalasan Reddy said the accused were Dulam Sampath and his son Dulam Raju of Perapalli of Kamanpur mandal, Balasani Ajay, Ragadimaddikunta, Sultanabad mandal, Madisetti Rakesh of Rompikunta, Kamanpur mandal, Peddapalli district and Vennapusala Rakesh Reddy of Appireddypali of Devaruppalla in Janagoan district.

Raju, Ajay, Rakesh and Rakesh Reddy stay in a room in Hyderabad. While Rakesh Reddy was working for e-commerce giant, the others were engaged in other works. The four were not happy with their earnings and decided to make some quick money through burglary. They sought Raju’s father Sampath’s advise and he also decided to sail with them.

On December 15 afternoon, Ajay, Rakesh Reddy and Raju went to Challur in Veenavanka mandal in a two-wheeler to meet their relatives. While returning, they observed a cash deposit vehicle in front of SBI Utoor. Believing that there would be huge amount of cash in the branch, Ajay and Rakesh Reddy did a recce of the bank and looked out for CCTV cameras, alarm system and doors to enter the branch. They also did a quick recce of houses located near the bank, the CP said.

At around 12.45 am the same day, they came to the bank. They gained entry by breaking iron grills fixed to a wooden side door frame with a sword and iron rods. After entering into bank, they immediately disconnected the burglary alarm system.

Later, they got into the strong room through the bank manager’s room and tried to break the cash chest locker. Meanwhile, Manakondur mobile patrol was passing by, and on hearing the siren, they fled from the spot.

On getting to know about the break-in attempt the next day, police rushed to the branch, registered a case and took up investigation. A special team that was formed to pursue the case was examining CCTV footage from areas and traced the burglars’ movements in Vegurupalli and Sultanabad route in Perapalli on Friday, and they were immediately arrested. Two bikes, a sword, iron roads and a bag were recovered from the accused.

Kamalasan Reddy said the bank officials had failed to replace the night watchman who was infected by Covid-19 and was on leave, besides not connecting the burglar alarm to the side door.

CP Kamalasan Reddy appreciated the special team cops who played a vital role in cracking the case within a short period.
