Flower prices surge in Hyderabad as supply shortage drives up bouquet costs

A supply shortage has pushed up wholesale flower prices in Hyderabad, increasing the cost of bouquets and floral arrangements. Florists, event planners and hamper makers are facing higher input costs, prompting price revisions and greater use of artificial flowers for décor.

Hyderabad: Buying a bouquet is now set to cost more than usual, with the prices of several flowers witnessing a sharp increase over the past few weeks. Florists say a shortage in supply has driven up wholesale prices, a trend that is now reflecting in the retail market, making bouquets and floral arrangements more expensive for customers.

“There is a shortage in the market, and rates have increased. We get our flowers from Bengaluru, where production has come down, and that has led to prices rising across several markets,” said Anil, a florist in Panjagutta.

Among the most affected are roses, one of the highest-selling flowers throughout the year. Florists say the price of a single rose, which earlier retailed for around Rs 30, has now gone up to Rs 40-45. Overall, wholesale prices of flowers have increased by nearly 15 to 20 per cent, depending on the flower variety.

Premium flowers have witnessed an even steeper rise. “There is a shortage in the production of flowers, prices of lilies, carnations, and other flowers have gone up. Chrysanthemums, which were earlier priced at Rs 280-300 per bundle, are now selling for Rs 450-480. A lily stem that used to cost around Rs 100 is now priced at nearly Rs 160,” said the owner of Fiora.

The increase in flower prices is not limited to florists alone. Event planners and hamper makers, who use fresh flowers extensively for decor and gifting, are also feeling the impact. Many of them have either revised their pricing or started using fewer fresh flowers to balance rising costs.

“Real flower decor has become increasingly popular, but with prices going up, many customers are now opting for a mix of fresh and artificial flowers to stay within their budget. Hopefully, the situation improves in the coming months,” said Prabhu, an event manager from the city.
