FNECS says AoC alternative roads offer no benefit to north-eastern colonies

Hyderabad: A day after Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy laid the foundation stone for two alternative roads at AoC Circle in Secunderabad Cantonment, the Federation of North-Eastern Colonies of Secunderabad (FNECS) and several Resident Welfare Associations (RWAs) said the project would offer no benefit to their colonies.

On Tuesday, the FNECS issued a press release following media reports that the existing civilian roads at AoC Circle would be closed once the alternative roads are constructed.

The federation claimed that the roads proposed under the project would facilitate east-west movement between the city and the Safilguda-Malkajgiri area. However, it argued that the project would not provide any improvement for north-south traffic between the city and areas such as Bollarum, Hakimpet, Yapral, Kowkur, Balaji Nagar, Sainikpuri, Vayupuri, A.S. Rao Nagar, Kushaiguda and localities further to the north-east.

The FNECS further stated that while the additional roads may benefit travel along the east-west corridor, they would not address the needs of commuters travelling north-south between the city and the listed neighbourhoods and adjoining areas.

Highlighting the Hyderabad Traffic Police’s objections to the closure of Cantonment roads at AoC Circle in 2022, when local military authorities had proposed the move, the federation said traffic volume in the area was already high and that the closure of the roads had led to a substantial increase in fuel consumption, air pollution and noise pollution.

The FNECS demanded that no existing road be closed either during or after the construction of the alternative roads at AoC Circle.
