FNECS seeks reopening of closed cantonment roads

The Federation of North Eastern Colonies of Secunderabad has urged military authorities to reopen roads closed in Bolarum Cantonment. It said the closures have increased travel times, caused congestion and inconvenienced more than 10 lakh residents in the north-eastern parts of the twin cities.

Hyderabad: The Federation of North Eastern Colonies of Secunderabad (FNECS) on Tuesday urged the Local Military Authorities to immediately reopen all the closed roads, as the closure was causing inconvenience to the residents in these areas.

The Federation in a statement said since August 31, the Local Military Authorities have closed all roads in Bolarum Cantonment and the closure of these roads was causing tremendous inconvenience to over 10 lakh residents of north eastern parts of the twin cities.

The commuting times have shot up as they are forced to take long detours, and a trip from Yapral to Hakimpet checkpost, which used to take barely 10 minutes, is now taking more than 40 minutes during evening hours. This is because the remaining open roads in the municipal corporation area were seeing tremendous congestion.

The Federation said that in the past, Hyderabad City Traffic Police have objected to closure of Cantonment Roads. In 2022, when military authorities tried to close several roads in the Cantonment, the Joint Commissioner of Police, Traffic, Hyderabad City had pointed out an increase in traffic, vehicle transit times being higher and speeds lower, and an increase in pollution and increased consumption of fuel.

There was no official announcement regarding closing these roads, and guards at the closed gates said that there is a “Red Alert” following the theft of arms and ammunition at the Madras Regiment premises. However, there was no official notice of any such Red Alert either, FNECS said.
