Hyderabad: Dr B Prasada Rao, former DGP of erstwhile Andhra Pradesh, passed away in US following a cardiac arrest. He is survived by wife Sowmini, son Vikas, daughter-in-law Soumya and a toddler grandson.
Prasada Rao along with his wife went to US a few months ago and had been staying with his son and other family members. At around 1 am (IST) in the wee hours of Monday, he complained of chest pain and wanted to be taken to the hospital. However, he passed away before the ambulance carrying him, could reach the hospital.
A 1979 batch IPS officer, Prasada Rao served as the DGP for a year between 2013-2014 in the erstwhile Andhra Pradesh. He took over as the DGP following the retirement of V Dinesh Reddy and then retired from the service in 2014. He was awarded the Indian Police Medal for meritorious service in 1997 and the President’s Police Medal for distinguished service in 2006.
Prasada Rao also served as the police commissioner of Hyderabad and Cyberabad, DGP of Anti-Corruption Bureau and other key posts including the Superintendent of Police (SP) of Nizamabad, Karimnagar and Nalgonda districts and also as SP of Vigilance cell, SP Intelligence and commandant of the Central Industrial Security Force at Visakhapatnam and Bhopal. He was also the DIG of Eluru and Kurnool ranges and the additional director of the Anti Corruption Bureau and DIG of the Security Wing of Intelligence.
A native of Guntur district in Andhra Pradesh, Rao was a post-graduate in Physics from IIT Madras. He was awarded a PhD for his research on ‘Wave-Particle Duality of Light’ by Sri Krishnadevaraya University in 2014. After retirement, he continued his passion for Physics and worked as a visiting faculty of Andhra University, Visakhapatnam, JNTU, Kakinada and Hyderabad, Sri Krishnadevaraya University to teach the subject.
Chief Minister K Chandrashekhar Rao has mourned the death of Prasada Rao. He conveyed his condolences to members of the bereaved family.
Similarly, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Jagan Mohan Reddy also expressed grief over the demise of Prasada Rao, and conveyed his condolences to the bereaved family members.
