Hyderabad: One of the most reputed hockey coaches from the city, Dorai Swamy, passed away on Wednesday. He was 70.
A qualified coach from the National Institute of Sports who worked in the then united Andhra Pradesh as the Sports Authority of Andhra Pradesh coach is one of those who mentored the likes of former internationals N. Mukesh Kumar, Edwards Alloysius, to name some of his trainees.
Mukesh and Alloysius expressed shock at the demise of whom they described as a ‘selfless coach’ who put his heart and soul into grooming young talent at the Gymkhana hockey ground in Secunderabad.
“He was my first coach, made me a goalkeeper at the MCH summer camp in Shenoy Nursing Home, and was instrumental in nurturing young talent,” recalled Alloysius.
Mukesh said the hockey fraternity would surely miss the expertise, sincerity and commitment of Dorai Swamy.
Telangana Hockey secretary C.R. Bheem Singh, former football international and SAAP coach Aleem Khan, also expressed condolences to the bereaved family members.
