Hyderabad: Governor Jishnu Dev Varma called upon students to become the ambassadors of knowledge, innovation and sustainable development.
He also called for adaptive policies, improved infrastructure and strong public-private partnerships to combat the most pressing horticulture challenges such as climate change, post-harvest losses and market volatility.
Participating in the fourth convocation of Sri Konda Laxman Telangana Horticultural University (SKLTGHU) held here on Tuesday, Governor Varma, who is also SKLTGHU Chancellor, said with over 353 million tonnes of horticultural production, India stands as a global leader — second only to China in fruits and vegetables.
ICRISAT Director General Dr. Himanshu Pathak said India has transformed from a food-deficient nation to one of self-sufficiency and export. ‘According to International Monetary Fund projections, India is poised to become the world’s third-largest economy by 2027, trailing only the US and China,” he said.
SKLTGHU Vice Chancellor Dr. D Raji Reddy presented the varsity’s progress report. A total of 159 undergraduate, 38 PG and five PhD scholars in horticulture were awarded degrees. Similarly, 55 undergraduate and 10 postgraduate students received degrees in forestry. As many as 13 gold medals were presented to meritorious students.
