From aspiring golfer to coach, Sanjay Singh eyes more success stories

Sanjay Singh, a Hyderabad-based golf coach, believes Vishesh Sharma’s Golconda Masters triumph highlights the importance of dedicated training and facilities. With years of coaching experience, Singh hopes to nurture more young talent and produce world-class golfers from Telangana

Hyderabad: For 52-year-old Sanjay Singh, an Intermediate in Cost Accountancy and a quiet performer on the greens at Boulder Hills Golf Course in the city, every win counts. It has been a truly memorable September for him, with his trainee Vishesh Sharma clinching the prestigious Rs 1-crore Golconda Masters championship.

“I believe his victory is a game-changer, especially for parents in terms of believing in young talent. Vishesh’s success is a reminder that if proper training facilities are backed by a golfer’s dedication, the results are bound to be there,” Sanjay told Telangana Today.

“Vishesh is a very process-oriented golfer. Even when the coach is not there, he follows the game plan from tournament to tournament, diligently executing all the tactics, backed by his amazing skills, which is a rarity,” said Sanjay, the proud mentor-cum-coach.

“Well, a 19-year-old like Vishesh winning his pro title in his second year as a professional is truly an inspirational achievement,” he said.

“Looking back, I had dreams of becoming a golfer of repute. But I didn’t have a proper coach. Soon, I decided to take up coaching, learning a lot about the art of coaching, understanding the terminology and how to produce better players,” said Sanjay, who is inspired by Indrajit Bhalotia, a professional and national golf coach from the IGU.

“Well, awareness of golf has increased tremendously in Telangana in the last few years, as the city also has eight golf courses. The IGU events in the city are also a major boost to the sport for sure,” Sanjay said.

“Personally, I believe that clubs should play a bigger role in promoting golf in the city. It is great that schools like DPS Hyderabad, where I have been training since 2014, Aga Khan Academy and The Shri Ram School have a lot of passion for golf. I am lucky to mentor some of the young talent like Saatvic, Tarun Ajay, Vivaan Bhavika and many Zonal players who are training under me, apart from Sneha and Vishesh,” said Sanjay, who is on the teaching faculty of IGU-NGAI and CGS, a PGA of Australia coaching body, and owes a lot to the Boulder Hills management.

“My dream is to produce world-class golfers and I appeal to corporate groups to come forward in a big way, as golf is the sport where India is going to make it really big,” Sanjay said.

Interestingly, Sanjay’s daughter Sneha Singh has already made a huge impact and is, in a way, lucky to have her father as her mentor, as he knows the challenges involved in making her a champion golfer.

Clearly, Sanjay is keen to script many more success stories on the greens.
