Khammam: A fruit vendor attempted suicide by consuming pesticide at Chintakani mandal headquarters in the district on Thursday as his fruit stall was removed by revenue officials.

The vendor, Matangi Srinu was said to have been running a fruit stall in front of the local tahsildar office for 15 years. The officials removed the shop on Thursday as it was located on government land. The vendor was shifted to a hospital in Khammam and his condition was said to be critical.

Srinu’s wife Gita lodged a police complaint against the locals Vemula Srinivas Rao, Vemula Akash and some scribes whom she accused of harassing her husband for the past few days and put pressure on revenue officials to remove his fruit stall. Mild tension prevailed following the incident.

In another incident at Komatlagudem in the mandal, a 50 year old farmer B Srinivasa Rao allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself to a tree in front of his house. The deceased was allegedly abused and beaten up by a farmer R Purnachander Rao for asking the latter to release water to his maize crop he cultivated in 3 acres of land. Feeling humiliated at the incident, Srinivasa Rao took the extreme step, police said.
