Gachibowli flyover works choke key IT corridor roads

Construction of steel flyovers and an underpass at IIIT Hyderabad Junction has intensified traffic congestion in Gachibowli. Commuters cite reduced road space, prolonged diversions and poorly visible barricades, urging authorities to adopt phased construction and improve safety measures after dark.

Hyderabad: Cyberabad’s premier IT corridor has become a major bottleneck as multi-level steel flyovers and underpass construction at IIIT Hyderabad Junction in Gachibowli enter an intensive phase.

Iron and plastic barricades around construction sites have choked traffic on key corridors connecting Hitec City, Financial District, Lingampally and Kokapet, commuters said. They alleged the blockades occupied a considerable motorable road space, causing heavy congestion, and lacked highly visible reflective tape and blinking LED markers needed for safe navigation after dark.

Cyberabad Traffic Police recently announced a strict 90-day extension of road closures and diversions, causing heavy daily disruption for scores of commuters. Steel and plastic barricades have effectively sealed key stretches on all four sides of the intersection.

Commuters say building steel flyovers and underpasses was welcome, but Cyberabad Municipal Corporation and traffic police must try to limit the length of roads barricaded to minimise inconvenience to road users. “Contractors should work in phases, fully clearing one stretch before closing another, saving commuters time and fuel,” said Aishwarya Menon, a fashion designer at Masjid Banda.
