Hyderabad: The Gachibowli Hockey Stadium has received the prestigious Category-1 Field Certification from the International Hockey Federation (FIH), marking a significant milestone for hockey infrastructure in Telangana and across the country.
As part of the certification process, the FIH conducted comprehensive field and performance tests to assess the quality and playing characteristics of the facility.
The evaluation covered the playing surface, ball roll and movement, surface uniformity, field dimensions, line markings, drainage, player safety, hockey goals, team and officials’ facilities, perimeter fencing, spectator amenities and other infrastructure required for hosting international-level competitions.
The stadium was found to comply with the prescribed FIH standards in all key areas. With this certification, Gachibowli Hockey Stadium becomes the first and only Category-1 water-based synthetic turf hockey field in the country, further strengthening Hyderabad’s position as a venue for international hockey.
Quality testing also confirmed that the hockey turf meets FIH-approved global product standards. The assessment found no manufacturing or installation-related deficiencies that could adversely affect ball performance or the quality of play. The field was found to meet international standards in terms of playing quality, performance, player safety and durability.
The FIH also conducted a detailed assessment of the stadium’s field lighting, which is critical for hosting international matches. The facility was certified as meeting the TV3-level lighting requirements prescribed for Category-1 fields, ensuring suitability for televised international competitions.
The FIH Category-1 certification will remain valid until February 26, 2029. The certification adds another significant recognition to Gachibowli Hockey Stadium’s capability to host international-standard hockey competitions.
“The achievement follows the successful hosting of the International Women’s Hockey Qualifier matches held at Gachibowli Stadium from March 8 to 13. Officials of the Telangana Sports Authority worked in close coordination and undertook continuous efforts to upgrade and prepare the venue to international standards within a record time,” SATG VC & MD Dr. Soni Bala Devi said.
“The FIH Category-1 certification is a testament to these coordinated efforts and further reinforces the capability of Gachibowli Hockey Stadium to host major international hockey events,” she said.
