Gandhi Hospital doctors help woman with Eisenmenger syndrome deliver healthy baby

Doctors at Gandhi Hospital successfully managed the high-risk pregnancy of a 22-year-old woman with a large VSD, severe pulmonary arterial hypertension, Eisenmenger syndrome and valve regurgitation. She delivered a healthy 2.3-kg baby boy by elective caesarean section

Hyderabad: A team of doctors at Gandhi Hospital successfully managed a high-risk pregnancy, helping a 22-year-old woman with a rare and severe complex heart condition safely deliver a healthy baby boy.

Heena Begum, who was 37 weeks pregnant, was suffering from critical cardiac conditions, including a large perimembranous ventricular septal defect (VSD), a congenital heart condition commonly known as a “hole in the heart”, measuring 1.9 cm. Her condition was also complicated by severe pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH), Eisenmenger syndrome, and severe tricuspid (TR) and mitral regurgitation (MR), doctors said.

Eisenmenger syndrome during pregnancy is exceedingly rare and occurs in roughly two out of every 100,000 pregnancies, carrying extraordinarily high maternal and fetal risks, doctors added.

Diagnosed with the heart condition at just 12 weeks of pregnancy, Heena was brought under specialised care at Gandhi Hospital. Throughout her pregnancy, she underwent regular antenatal check-ups under close monitoring by Unit-2.

As she reached term, she was admitted and successfully delivered a healthy male baby weighing 2.3 kg via an elective caesarean section on September 3.

Prof Dr Janaki, Professor of OBG, along with her team, coordinated intensive postoperative ICU management and continuous cardiac evaluations.

Heena Begum has recovered well and is being discharged on postoperative day 15 in stable condition, returning home with her healthy newborn baby.
