Gandhi Hospital doctors manage high-risk childbirth in woman with rare blood disorder

Hyderabad: A multidisciplinary team of specialists from various departments at Gandhi Hospital successfully managed a high-risk childbirth involving a 21-year-old woman suffering from a very rare congenital blood disorder.

Yadla Laxmi, a resident of Dharmapur village in Penpahad mandal of Suryapet district, was admitted to the hospital on August 21 at 37 weeks and six days of gestation. Laxmi is a known case of congenital factor VII deficiency.

The condition is an extremely rare inherited bleeding disorder caused by a shortage or dysfunction of the blood-clotting protein Factor VII, leading to an increased risk of abnormal bleeding. It affects only one in every 500,000 individuals, said Gandhi Hospital Superintendent Dr T. Usha Rani.

Managing pregnancy and delivery in women with the condition poses a risk of haemorrhage that can quickly become life-threatening, Dr Usha Rani said, adding that multiple teams from various departments at the hospital coordinated to manage the complicated case.

To ensure a safe delivery and prevent bleeding, doctors at the hospital administered 65 vials of recombinant Factor VII, which were specially procured through the Commissioner of Family Welfare.

The planning paid off on Friday, September 11, when Laxmi safely delivered a healthy baby girl at around 6.15 pm. The newborn weighed 2 kg at birth. Following the delivery, both the mother and baby are doing well.
