Hyderabad: It is that time of the year when the city celebrates the festival dedicated to the remover of obstacles – Lord Ganesha. On Thursday and the days before, the city sported a colourful look, with preparations in full swing for Friday’s festivities. Markets were buzzing with activity as people went about buying exquisitely crafted idols, flowers, fruits and leaves that are traditionally offered to the deity.
One thing that was seen differently this year was the higher number of eco-friendly clay idols that seemed to dominate the markets over Plaster of Paris idols. The increased environmental consciousness seemed to reflect in the markets.
Apartments and residential localities got busy setting up vibrant pandals like every year, with the pandemic not dampening the festive spirit in any way. This proved the collective resilience of Hyderabadis as people come together to celebrate the festival and offer prayers to Lord Ganesha.
Ganesh Chaturthi is a big attraction for children, as they look forward to wear new clothes and have fun during festivities. While the celebrations were muted last year due to Covid, this year, children along with elders ensured that they purchased new clothes and other necessary items for the festival.
It’s time to gorge on delicious ‘modaks’ and ‘undrallu’ aka ‘kudumulu’ that are a major part of the traditional offering and celebrate an important festival of the year!
