Ganesh immersion continues; the big cleanup starts in Hyderabad

Hyderabad: Immersion of Ganesh idols is continuing in the city on Monday, with several of the idols still being brought to Hussain Sagar, Saroornagar Lake and the Pragathi Nagar Lake, to mention a few, even as the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation has deployed its force along with machinery to clean up the streets and the lakes.
The major cleanup process, which assumes significance in the backdrop of the instructions of the Supreme Court has the GHMC’s staff and machinery removing puja material, idols and debris from the streets and also from the waterbodies. Heavy vehicles and special sanitation teams were deployed near water bodies where immersion is underway.
Apart from Ganesh pandal organizers, several families were also spotted at the lakes and artificial ponds immersing idols on Monday.
In the GHMC limits, there are 28 artificial ponds and most of them are located near water bodies. On Monday, immersion was underway at all these ponds, idols upto 8 feet were immersed in them. Sanitation workers were removing all the debris and idols from all the water bodies where idols were immersed.
” The puja material and the idols are being removed soon after they are immersed. Fogging has also been taken up at Ganesh immersion points,” GHMC Chief Entomologist Ram Babu said.
