Khammam: Police arrested an absconding Armed Reserve police constable and his relative in connection with a ganja smuggling case. Town ACP Anjaneyulu on Monday said the accused constable A Venkateshwarlu alias Venkat, who works in Kothagudem district, and his close relative Bandari Vishwatej alias Vasu were arrested by Khammam Urban Police at Srisri Circle in the city.
Two kgs of cannabis, two cell phones and a motorcycle worth Rs 40,000 were seized from the accused. To make easy money by smuggling marijuana, the constable bought seven kgs of marijuana three months ago from a man named Raju at Sileru.
Fifteen days ago, the accused Venkat and his nephew Vishwatej came to Khammam and handed over five kg of cannabis to a constable Konda Sathish. Sathish and an advocate Venkateshwarlu were nabbed while trying to sell the cannabis to a person serving as Khammam district jail warden on March 3, the ACP explained.
The accused Venkat was allegedly assisted by Rudraboina Gopi alias Gopala Krishna of Bhadrachalam in the past. Special teams have been engaged in a manhunt to nab the jail warden and Raju. To conduct an in-depth investigation into the origins of the cannabis case and take legal action against the perpetrators, Police Commissioner Vishnu S Warrier had set up four special teams, he added.
