Medak: The rains during the past 24 hours brought smiles back to the faces of farmers as Ghanpur anicut, a medium irrigation project built across the Manjeera river at Edupayala temple, has started overflowing. The surplus water has started flowing into the Nizam Sagar located downstream. Since Medak district received incessant rains on Monday and Tuesday, water was flowing over the dam at Edupayala.

Meanwhile, the Singur project has received its first inflows of the season. The multipurpose project recorded a little over 600 cusecs of water on Tuesday morning. At a time when the irrigation, HMWSSB and Mission Bhagiratha departments were finding it difficult to supply drinking water to Hyderabad, Sangareddy, Medak and Kamareddy, the inflow provided temporary relief to them.

Meanwhile, irrigation officials released 100 MCFT of water from Singur to Manjeera dam to meet drinking water needs on Tuesday. Medak district received average rainfall of 38.5mm during the past 24 hours till 8.30 am on Tuesday. While Chegunta recorded 81mm rainfall, Medak town received 77mm rainfall, which resulted in waterlogging in several low-lying areas. Sangareddy and Siddipet also received considerable rain during the period, providing big relief to farmers amid the El Nino scare.
