Hyderabad: The GHMC Head Office will have a new fountain following the recent facelift of the statue pedestals located at the rear (eastern) side. The beautification of the fountain and other civil works was completed on Monday. GHMC authorities are planning to unveil the new fountain on Tuesday, on the occasion of the GHMC ordinary general body meeting scheduled at 11 am.
Interestingly, Mahatma Gandhi and Dr B R Ambedkar statues were installed in two different locations on the premises of the GHMC Head Office, but there is no information on where the YSR statue was installed.
In June, the three statues—former united AP chief minister YSR, Mahatma Gandhi and Dr B R Ambedkar—were wrapped in white cloths since 2009 but could not be unveiled due to various reasons. On May 22, the GHMC standing committee, chaired by Hyderabad Mayor Gadwal Vijayalaxmi, passed a resolution to relocate these statues and build a water fountain.
In 2010, when the Congress Party’s Mayor was in power, there was an attempt to unveil the YSR statue on the occasion of the first death anniversary of united AP chief minister Y S Rajasekhara Reddy, but it was again deferred. Finally, all three statues were relocated and beautification works were taken up.
