Hyderabad: Twenty sets of nominations from 17 candidates were filed on the first day of filing nominations for the December 1 GHMC elections.

Among the 20 nominations, six were filed by the Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS), five by Telugu Desam Party (TDP), three by Congress, two were filed by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), one by a recognised political party and three by independent candidates. Out of the 17 candidates who filed nominations, four filed for Kapra circle, three for Uppal circle, one for Saroornagar, two for Santoshnagar, two for RC Puram, one for Kukatpally, one for Qutbullapur and two for Malkajgiri.

The nominations are being received by the Returning Officers from 10 am to 3 pm. Two persons are permitted to accompany the candidate for submission of nomination. The number of vehicles for nomination purpose is also restricted to two.

Meanwhile, State Election Commissioner C Partha Sarathi said the General Observers play a crucial role in the conduct of elections and based on the reports submitted by them, the SEC would initiate action. During a meeting with Election Observers here on Wednesday, he said as representatives of Election Commission, the observers would be handling duties right from nomination filing to declaring results.

Observers should submit their reports directly to the SEC. Depending on the reports, especially those pertaining to the poll day and counting day, the SEC would take a decision on recounting or declaring results, he said, adding that observers should closely monitor the arrangements at polling centres, expenditure by candidates and other aspects and aid in smooth conduct of the elections.
