Hyderabad: Crisscrossing the city might not be a major task, but do you have any idea of the length of the road network in the city?

The road network in the limits of the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) alone total to a stunning 9,013 km! And that should explain that maintaining such a massive network is not easy.

To keep these roads in usable and traffic worthy condition, there are a series of measures taken up every financial year, including periodic inspections, quality control audit, an exclusive grievance redressal system and also roping in agencies to re-carpet and maintain 709.49 km of main roads.

According to GHMC officials, the 9,013km-road network comprises 2,846 BT roads and 6,167 km Cement Concrete (CC) roads. To maintain them, during 2021-22 (till January), a total of 2,562 road works at an estimated cost of Rs 644.48 crore were sanctioned. Out of these, 802 works costing Rs 177.27 crore were completed and 1,760 works costing Rs 467.21 crore were in various stages of execution.

15,696 potholes filled in 2021

In 2021, a total of 15,696 potholes had to be filled to make the roads usable to commuters. These works do not include restoration of main roads, as they were entrusted to agencies as part of the Comprehensive Road Maintenance Programme (CRMP). The State government sanctioned Rs 1,839 crore under CRMP for maintenance of 709.49 km main roads (three lane and above width) in the GHMC limits comprising 401 stretches.

As part of this programme, the agencies were given the responsibility of overall upkeep and maintenance of all the main road stretches in traffic-worthy condition for five years. Till date, out of the total 709.49 km main road network, 496.77 km have been re-carpeted by CRMP agencies. In 2021-22 (till January) a total of 124.74 km of road was re-carpeted. Maintenance of footpaths, central median, kerb painting, lane marking, sweeping and greenery development was also taken up in these stretches.

Redressal system

The CRMP expenditure incurred till date is Rs 594.10 crore with Rs 177.98 crore being spent during 2021-22 (till January). To further make the roads commuter friendly, GHMC has made it mandatory for the CRMP agencies to set up a redressal system. Following this, the agencies have established control rooms to attend the complaints from citizens and till date 15,849 complaints have been attended to, officials said.
