Hyderabad: The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has pulled off another engineering feat, this time by installing the longest span on any flyover as part of the Strategic Road Development Plan (SRDP) in the State capital, 18 metres above the ground, and that too, at one of the busiest traffic junctions in the city.

The latest chapter in the GHMC’s engineering successes is the 64-metre span to build the four-lane bi-directional flyover from Shilpa Layout to Outer Ring Road (ORR) near Gachibowli Junction. The span was installed around 18 metres above the ground and was placed across the existing Gachibowli Crossroad Flyover.

This twin steel girder, officials said, is the longest span installed till date on any flyover built under the State government’s ambitious Strategic Road Development Plan (SRDP).

The task to lay the girder was not an easy one with three big cranes being roped in to execute the difficult task, GHMC engineers said. “The achievement involved a lot of complexity due to multiple reasons, and we have to remember that the junction is also one of the busiest in the city,” one of the engineers said.

“I would like to thank all the people involved in the project for their support. I also congratulate the agency M Venkata Rao Infra Projects for their hard work and technical capability to execute these critical urban infrastructure works,” said Venkata Ramana, Serilingampally Superintendent Engineer (Project Wing), also thanking the cops saying the feat would have not been possible without the support of Cyberabad Traffic Police.

The 823-metre-long, 16.60-metre-wide flyover will improve the connectivity from Shilpa Layout to ORR. On the Shilpa Layout road, peak hour traffic in 2020 was 1,464 passenger car units (PCU) per hour and the projected peak hour traffic in 2040 is 5,194 PCU per hour.
