Hyderabad: Colossal power bills are slowly becoming history in the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation, where a few energy conservation measures are making an appreciable difference.
The move to gradually incorporate solar sources for power generation in the GHMC has helped the civic body save Rs 3.40 crore in two years. The revenue saving was made possible by an initiative that saw solar energy panels installed on 34 buildings, including animal care centres and zonal offices. The panels helped GHMC generate 28.23 lakh units of electricity in two years, officials said.
“To set up these panels and to commission the 941 KiloWatt Peak (KWP) solar PV grid-connected rooftop system, Rs 3.50 crore was spent,” officials said, pointing out that the project was taken up with the assistance of experts from the Telangana State Renewable Energy Development Corporation (TSREDCO). This was in addition to inputs from The Energy and Resource Institute (TERI)- the consultant who did the feasibility study.
And from the day the GHMC began looking up to the sun from these 34 buildings, there were changes. From struggling to meet the power requirements to meet the demand/supply, the corporation also saw the bills plummeting.
“In a few more months, the investment will be covered and for decades, this approach will benefit the corporation and save crores of rupees,” Mamatha, GHMC Executive Engineer from the Urban Community Development wing said. The maintenance of solar panels is easy and cost-effective, officials said.
“With periodic cleaning and service, we can maintain them with less expenditure. Besides tapping solar energy, we are planning to cut down the usage of energy in summer with the cooperation of staffers,” they said.
According to TSREDCO, solar energy is considered one of the best practices to adapt to bring down environmental pollution. Meanwhile, to encourage people to move towards solar energy, TSREDCO has made available Empanelled Solar System Integrators/Suppliers in the public domain on its website.
