Hyderabad: With the heavy rains over the last few weeks leaving the city roads damaged in many areas, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) has launched road repair works, especially on internal roads and other major thoroughfares at a cost of over Rs 52 crore. This is in addition to the works being taken up under the Comprehensive Road Maintenance Programme (CRMP).

The municipal corporation has identified 315 stretches covering over 99.51 km across the six zones. All the Zonal Commissioners have been directed to complete all the repair works by November 15 or before. Unlike previous years, the municipal corporation this year had taken up extensive road recarpeting works during the summer, making good use of the traffic-free roads during the lockdown.

However, the incessant rains have undone a part of the good work. On Friday too, the city received 28 mm rainfall in a short span. As a result of the heavy rains, many roads in different areas have been battered and damaged badly. Already, residents are complaining about the bad roads in their colonies and so are motorists shuttling on different major thoroughfares.

Venkatranga Reddy, a resident of Saibaba Nagar Colony, Old Alwal tweeted: “Very bad condition of roads in our colony. Despite repeated complaints, GHMC is not taking any action. In a few areas, the BT layer on the road surface has been washed away, subjecting motorists to lot of inconvenience.”

Sharing images of a stretch in Chandanagar, Srinivas Bellam tweeted: “Please look into the condition of stretch towards Indu Fortune fields from the RUB.” With complaints coming in from different areas, the municipal corporation has commenced road repair works, focusing on BT roads. Zonal Commissioners have been instructed to complete the road works by November 15, a GHMC official said, adding that the works had to be suspended for a couple of days in some areas due to the rains.

CRMP works to be expedited

Hyderabad: In addition to the roads being recarpeted and maintained by the GHMC, focus is now on roads being maintained by private agencies under the Comprehensive Road Maintenance Programme (CRMP) in the city. The Municipal Corporation under its efforts to ensure pothole-free and black top roads, better maintenance and longevity, has roped in private agencies to take up road maintenance works under the CRMP.

Officials have been directed to levy penalties on agencies that fail to complete the works as per schedule. These works will be covering 709 km of major roads and other thoroughfares over and in the first year, the agencies have been directed to complete the recarpeting of 331 km. Out of this, the agencies have managed to complete works on 294 km so far. The remaining works are to be completed in a month, an official said.

Accordingly, the municipal corporation has now directed the agencies to expedite the works and complete them at the earliest to avoid inconvenience to roads users. Agencies have been instructed to complete the lane markings, Zebra crossings, table drains etc. This apart they have also been directed to ensure manholes and catchpits are constructed to the road level to avoid bumpy rides.
