Hyderabad: At a time when attempts are being made to divide people on religious lines, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation is developing infrastructure that brings into consideration the requirements of different religions.

At both these sites, a Vaikunta Dhamam for Hindus, a Khabristan for Muslims and a graveyard for Christians are being built on the same land parcel i.e., on a common site.

The facility in Saheb Nagar is spread over 13.64 acres and is being built by the GHMC at an estimated cost of Rs 458.60 lakh and has three separate entrances. The civic body also built a gas-and oil-fired crematorium at an additional cost of Rs 90 lakh on a 151 sq metre land in this facility.

The facility at Padma Nagar Phase 2 is spread over two acres and built at an estimated cost of Rs 150 lakh with two entrances. Both the facilities are equipped with several amenities which include an admin block, security room, waiting for halls, compound wall, burning platforms, ash storage facilities prayer hall, parking facility, pathways, wash areas, electrification, plantation and landscaping.

In addition to both these, three more facilities that enable people to perform the last rites are being developed in the GHMC limits.

A Vaikunta Dhamam in Borabanda ward, a Muslim graveyard in Gajularamaram and a Hindu crematorium in Begumpet are the ones under development. The GHMC has completed development of 24 crematoriums / graveyards with Rs 24.13 crore under Phase-I and under the second phase, 10 such facilities at an estimated cost of Rs 25.02 crore were taken up for development.

Among the works in Phase-2, the development of five facilities with an amount of Rs 11.08 crore has been completed and the remaining five are under various stages of execution. GHMC is taking up modernisation and development of graveyards and converting them into ‘model crematoriums/ graveyards’ by providing improved facilities, aesthetic look and pleasant environment for the convenience of the citizens during difficult times.
