Hyderabad: The animal welfare activists from the Greater Hyderabad Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (GHSPCA) rescued four Indian Roller birds (Palapitta) from various parts of the city during the Dasara festival.
The birds were recovered during targeted interventions following reports of illegal captivity. Two birds were rescued near the Tadbund Hanuman Temple, while one bird each was rescued from Nagole and Begum Bazar.
Spotting the Palapitta on Dasara is traditionally considered auspicious in Telangana. However, capturing and confining the wild birds for public viewing subjects them to severe stress, dehydration, and injuries. GHSPCA said.
Following the operations, all four birds were examined by veterinary expert Dr Vishva Chaitanya. While three birds were declared fit and cleared for release back into their natural habitat, the fourth bird sustained injuries, including a broken beak, and remains under medical care for extended observation.
GHSPCA has urged citizens to celebrate cultural festivals responsibly without causing harm or distress to wildlife. The rescue efforts were led by GHSPCA, drawn from various parts of Hyderabad, alongside other community members, Soudharm Bhandari, Coordinator, GHSPCA, said.
