Sandeep Molugu aka Sandy Artist is a well-known name in the glam world. The makeup artiste, who recently celebrated a decade in the industry, has worked with several A-list stars over the years. Be it Lakshmi Manchu, Regina Cassandra, Sobhita Dhulipala, Lavanya Tripathi, Niharika Konidela, PV Sindhu or Upasana Kamineni, the 37-year-old has been the go-to person for all of them. Especially on their big days – Sandy has also dolled up Niharika for her marriage with Chaitanya JV.
The Hyderabad-based artiste has also worked for many big fashion shows and designers such as Manish Malhotra, Varun Bahl, Tarun Tahiliani, Shantanu Nikhil, Shravan Kumar and JJ Valaya.
However, not many know that Sandy began his career as a call centre employee. He elaborates, “I worked in MNCs for six years as an accent and voice trainer. But I was inclined towards beauty and makeup ever since I was a kid – I would try on my sister’s makeup. I was also a dancer and took part in cultural activities growing up, so I would do makeup and hair for all the participants.”
He adds, “Eventually, I gained confidence and decided to take it up full-time and met with a few photographers. I approached magazines and worked on models, and people began liking my work as I was into makeup, hair, and also styling. I was then offered to work on the Bollywood movie English Vinglish.”
His career took off at that moment. Weddings were not Sandy’s forte, but he has been working on a lot of them in recent times. The celeb artiste has been using the lockdown period to relax and rejuvenate, and he hopes to start makeup workshops and tutorials somewhere down the line.
“Ever since Instagram arrived, I see every second person calling themselves a makeup artiste. While I appreciate their talent and skills, working real-time on another person is challenging and it comes through experience. I would suggest new artistes to work on different skins, textures and use different colours and products,” he says.
Keeping it subtle and soft is the current makeup trend, shares Sandy. “Skincare is important before makeup – moisturise and apply sunscreen all the time. When using makeup, try to keep your skin as clear as possible. Hydrate yourself well and apply vegetable and fruit masks. Use a lip balm as often as possible. That’s when your skin glows from within,” he adds.
