Hyderabad: In a daring daylight robbery, six armed assailants barged into the Khazana Jewellery showroom in Chandanagar on Tuesday and looted silver ornaments within minutes after opening fire inside the store.
According to police, the gang wearing masks entered the shop around 10:35 am, just five minutes after it was opened by the morning duty staff. Brandishing guns, they fired two rounds — one at the store’s CCTV cameras and another at the deputy manager’s leg.
“They first overpowered the store deputy manager and demanded the key to the safe vault where gold jewellery was kept. However, when he refused, they shot him in the leg,” said a senior police official.
Within the next five minutes, the gang decamped with a bag allegedly containing 1 kg of silver ornaments and fled towards Zaheerabad in a getaway vehicle.
The injured deputy manager was rushed to a hospital for treatment.
Police suspect the gang may have crossed into adjoining districts to evade capture.
Cyberabad Police Commissioner Avinash Mohanty, who visited the spot, said the robbery was pre-planned and that 10 special teams have been formed to track down the robbers. The gang was armed with firearms, rods, and sticks. Their plan seemed to be to loot quickly and escape with whatever they could carry.
“All local police stations, check-posts, and district police stations have been alerted along district borders. CCTV footage from surrounding areas is being examined to trace the entry and escape routes,” the commissioner said.
The Chandanagar police suspect it to be an interstate gang and are investigating whether it was the same gang recently involved in a robbery reported in Kukatpally.
