Warangal: A Good Samaritan police officer in the district has come forward to support two orphaned sisters by providing them shelter after the death of their parents.

Showing a sense of responsibility beyond his official duty, Nekkonda Sub-Inspector of Police Mashireddy Mahender has decided to construct a house with his own funds for Thallapally Jessi, a Class IX student, and her younger sister Thallapally Varshitha, who is studying in Class V.

The girls lost their parents, Elia and Mamatha of Pedda Korpolu village in Nekkonda mandal, within a short span, six months ago, following illness. Since then, they have been under the care of their grandmother Mallamma, who lives in a small thatched house that cannot accommodate all three.

Mahender came to know about the children’s plight through a newspaper report and decided to extend support. He initiated the construction of a two-room pucca house for the girls using his personal savings.

A few days ago, he performed the ‘bhoomi pooja’ along with the children and their grandmother at the village. Speaking to Telangana Today, the Sub-Inspector said the construction cost was expected to be around Rs 90,000 and could increase depending on requirements.

He said the elder sibling, Jessi, was staying in a social welfare hostel for her education, while the lack of adequate space in the grandmother’s house prompted the decision to build a separate house for the children.

“It is a small gesture for children who need moral support and a roof over their heads after losing their parents, who had no house of their own. I want them to feel that they are not orphans and that society stands by them,” Mahender said.

Villagers appreciated the Sub-Inspector’s compassionate gesture.
