Government declares Telangana Sona as grade-A variety of rice

Hyderabad: The State government on Tuesday said that Telangana Sona is grade A variety of rice and will be purchased accordingly at all the procurement centres. The clarification came following enquiries from several farmers particularly from Warangal and Karimnagar expressing fear that Telangana Sona might not be considered as fine variety. The government also released a list of fine and coarse varieties of paddy.
B Janardhan Reddy, principal secretary agriculture, through video conference discussed the issue with Civil Supplies officials and director, agriculture research. He provided technical information that would come in handy in deciding the categories for various varieties of rice.
“As per the guidelines of the Union government and the Food Corporation of India, there are two types of rice, fine and the normal variety. If the ratio of length and thickness is greater than 2.5, then it is grade A or fine variety and if the ratio of length and thickness is less than 2.5, then they will be considered as coarse or doddu variety,” he clarified.
Accordingly, the State government declared that Telangana Sona (RNR 15048), Samba Masoori (BPT 5204), HMT Sona, Jai Sriram, Jagtial Sannalu (JGL 1798), Polasa Prabha (JGL 384) , MTU 1061, MGU 1064, BPT 2595, BPT 3291, WGL 14, Warangal Sannalu ( WGL 32100) , Sidhi (WGL 44) , Jagtial-1 (JGL 24423) Cotton Dora Sannalu ( MTU 1010) , Kunaram Sannalu ( KNM 118), Batukamma (JGL 18047) , MTU 1153 , and MTU 1156 will be considered fine variety of paddy. Vijetha (MTU 1001) is classified as coarse or normal variety.
The officers handling procurement of paddy and agricultural extension officers were advised to educate farmers on the technical aspects and also the details of all the varieties under fine and coarse varieties to dispel misconceptions.
