Khammam: A Government Primary School in Revenue Minister Ponguleti Srinivas Reddy‘s Palair Assembly constituency has remained closed for the past two years due to a shortage of teachers and a decline in student strength.

As a result, the students who studied at the school in Ajmeer thanda in Tirumalayapalem are now forced to attend a government school at Jallepalli, three kilometres away from the thanda, besides private schools in other places.

A local resident, Hathiram, noted that when the school was functional, around 15 students studied there. Due to the alleged negligence of teachers in discharging their duties, the parents shifted their children to the school in Jallepalli.

As the school lacked teachers, the Badi Bata programme was not conducted this year. The local politicians as well as the Education department officials failed to motivate the parents to send their children to the school, he said.

Hathiram wanted the school to be reopened at the earliest with at least two teachers so that the students could study locally. The school is equipped with the required classrooms, toilets and water facility, but due to the inattention of the officials, it has remained closed, he noted.

Another resident, Balaji, said that if the school is reopened, parents are ready to send their children there. The teachers who were sent on deputation to other schools should be reinstated at the Ajmeer thanda Primary School, he said.

The Mandal Educational Officer, Babu, who took charge of the post a few days ago, stated that the school was closed due to a lack of student strength. Later, the teachers of the school were sent on deputation.

Efforts are being made to reopen the school as soon as possible by cancelling the deputation of the teachers and reinstating them at the Ajmeer thanda Primary School. He said he had spoken to the local sarpanch, who also expressed willingness to support the cause.
