Nearly Rs 3,000 crore in central funds would have to be returned if the polls were not conducted by March 31, 2026, which prompted the decision to hold these elections first to secure the funds. The MPTC and ZPTC elections would be held later, he said.

He said the issue of 42 percent reservation for BCs was pending before the High Court and that MPTC and ZPTC elections would be conducted based on the court’s directions.
